Maths 3x table activities

LO: To be able to multiply numbers by 3    Week 1: 4-6.1.17
This week we did a variety of activities and games to learn and consolidate the 3x table. We did written work and we worked the sums out mentally too. We used white boards and counters for the games. For some of the games we worked with our partners.
 
X3 Macarena warm-up
Roll the die, times the number by 3
X3 noughts and crosses sums, answers and mixed
On a white board. Write down the sums and answers in order. Ask partner to answer sums in order (verbally and/or written), after this ask them randomly.
On a white board. Write down the sums and answers in order. Rub out some of the answers. Swap with a partner. The partner needs to fill in the correct answers. Take turns.
Ipads – Hit the button – 3x table, mad for maths, help with maths. Snappy maths
Get cards with multiples of 3 and 3xtable sums. Match the sum to its answer.
Get cards with multiples of 3 and 3xtable sums. Turn them upside down. Pick up 2 cards. Do the sum and the answer match? If they do, keep them, if they don’t, turn them around and let your partner have a go.
Put the cards upside down in one pile. Pick up card. If it is a multiple of 3 say the sum. If it is the sum, say the answer.
Cards face down, pick up a card each. Work out answer. Whoever has the highest number can keep the cards.
Pick up 1 card. Answer question. What is the next multiple of 3?
Play snap with the cards. If the sum and answer are put on top of each other you can call snap. 
NRich Challenge - Tricky customer
Stage 3: short
Charlie wants to buy a new house but he doesn’t like house numbers that are divisible by 3 or 5. If all the houses numbered between 100 and 150 inclusive are for sale, how many houses can he choose from?


 

 
 

 
 

 
Evaluation
We had a lot of fun with the variety of games to learn and consolidate the 3x table. 

The Nrich Challenge was tricky in the beginning but once we understood the pattern we were able to work out which houses Charlie could choose from.  

We would like to do similar lessons again!
