Science Lesson - Floating and Sinking

28 Jan 2014

Hello,

As part of our work on Materials, we have been thinking about Floating and Sinking.

First we examined some different materials to see if we thought they would float or sink.

Then, in pairs, we made a boat from paper.

Later, we made a boat from cardboard.

Then, on our sheets, we predicted which materials we thought would float and which would sink.

Then, with the help of a brave volunteer, we tested each material in a tray of water.

We discovered that wood floats.

We discovered that polystyrene floats.

We discovered that the boats we made from paper floated.

We discovered that the boats we made from cardboard floated.

We discovered that when the ceramic saucer was placed in the water like this, it floated, however,

when the saucer was placed in the water like this, it sank.

Can you remember why?

(Incidentally, don't worry about the brave volunteer, he was rescued soon after the last photograph was taken.)
