How can I help support my child’s learning at home?

12 Mar 2020

Dear Year 6 Parents and Carers,

During Parents' Evening, many of you asked for ways to support your children at home. Based on the assessments in school, we have given the children different target areas and therefore some will receive online work and others will receive books.

How can I help support my child’s learning at home?

Maths
Depending on individual targets, the children will either receive online homework or have set pages in their CGP books to complete. The homework helps to support and revise the curriculum taught in school. When supporting your child, ask them to explain or teach you their methods for solving the work. To consolidate and deepen their understanding, ask them to use objects or pictures to explain a method.

Please note - the CGP books are for the children and they can write in them. The children are allowed to complete more than the homework set if they wish too.

Reading and Comprehension

All children should be reading daily at home. It’s important they enjoy what they read as this will lead to a genuine love for books. Please encourage them to read a variety of genres, including age appropriate articles and newspapers.

To extend their development in comprehension, question the children on their understanding of what they have read.

Here are some example questions:

Vocabulary – Find interesting synonyms/antonyms for (insert word from the text).
Inference  – How would someone feel if they were in the same situation as the character in this book?
Predict – What do you think might happen in the next chapter and what do you have that suggests this?
Explain – Why did the character make that decision, can you find evidence to support your answer?
Retrieve – What is the name of the main character? Where is the article set? When did this story take place?
Sequence – Summarise what you think has happened in this story so far.

Some children have been given CGP spelling books to borrow until the end of Year 6. We will not set homework from these but any extra work they can do from them with you at home will be beneficial. Please do not write in these books.

Grammar

Some children have been given CGP grammar books to borrow until the end of Year 6. We will not set homework from these but any extra work they can do from them with you at home will be beneficial. Please do not write in these books.

Spelling

Children should revise all the spellings from Autumn and Spring and continue to complete their spelling homework.
