The Mathematics test
There are three papers in the mathematics test for Year 6.
  • Paper 1 – Arithmetic (30 minutes)
  • Papers 2 & 3 – Mathematical Reasoning (40 minutes each)
Paper 1 will consist of fixed response questions, where children have to give the correct answer to calculations, including long multiplication and division.

Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types, including:
  • Multiple choice
  • True or false
  • Constrained questions, where you have to give the answer to a calculation, draw a shape or complete a table or chart
  • Less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem.
The English tests
There are two tests for English: Reading; and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS).
The reading test has one paper and the grammar, punctuation and spelling test has two papers.
  • Paper 1 – Reading test (60 minutes)
  • Paper 1 – Grammar, punctuation and vocabulary (45 minutes)
  • Paper 2 – Spelling test (15 minutes)

Before the assessments
  • Make sure your child goes to bed at a reasonable time the night before each assessment.
  • Getting up at a good time and having a healthy breakfast of cereal or fruit will make sure your child is well prepared for the assessment.
  • Don’t forget that we will be running a Breakfast Club for the Year 6s every morning of the SATS from 8.20am.
  • We recommend that all children attend if possible as it is a chance to talk to their friends and relax before the assessments.
Please remind your child not to worry about the assessments; they are an excellent opportunity to show their teachers everything they have learnt.
