Year 6 SATs 2017

03 May 2017

In Year 6, as well as preparing pupils for the national tests (SATs), we help them to be 'secondary school ready' by the end of the year.

This means that when they leave Handsworth, they will have the tools and knowledge to help them transition to Year 7, regardless of the school they move to.

SATs
Some parents have requested information on how they can help their children prepare for the SATs, so we have put together some information below to help you.

The tests take place next week (Monday 8th-Thursday 11th May).

Please note that we will be holding a SATs breakfast club for Year 6 from Monday to Thursday at 8.20am.

Date
Morning
Monday 8th May English: reading assessment (1 hour)
Tuesday 9th May English: grammar, punctuation and vocabulary (45 min)
Spelling test (30 min)
Wednesday 10th May Mathematics: arithmetic (30 min)
Mathematics: reasoning 1 (40 min)
Thursday 11th May Mathematics: reasoning 2 (40 min)

There are three tests altogether covering the various areas of English and Mathematics. See below for more information on these tests.

The Mathematics test
There are three papers in the mathematics test for Year 6.
  • Paper 1 – Arithmetic (30 minutes)
  • Papers 2 & 3 – Mathematical Reasoning (40 minutes each)
Paper 1 will consist of fixed response questions, where children have to give the correct answer to calculations, including long multiplication and division.

Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types, including:
  • Multiple choice
  • True or false
  • Constrained questions, where you have to give the answer to a calculation, draw a shape or complete a table or chart
  • Less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem.
The English tests
There are two tests for English: Reading; and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS).
The reading test has one paper and the grammar, punctuation and spelling test has two papers.
  • Paper 1 – Reading test (60 minutes)
  • Paper 1 – Grammar, punctuation and vocabulary (45 minutes)
  • Paper 2 – Spelling test (15 minutes)
Pupils will learn everything they need for the tests during lessons at school.

However, if you would like to help them revise, the Rising Stars Guide for Parents on the new national curriculum can help you prepare them for the tests.
