Year 6 SATS 2016
06 Feb 2016
In Year 6, as well as preparing pupils for the national tests (SATs), we help them to be 'secondary school ready' by the end of the year.
This means that when they leave Handsworth, they will have the tools and knowledge to help them transition to Year 7, regardless of the school they move to.
SATs
Some parents have requested information on how they can help their children prepare for the SATs, so we have put together some information below to help you.
The tests take place during the first full teaching week of May (Tuesday 10th-Friday 13th May).
There are three tests altogether covering the various areas of English and mathematics. There is more information on these tests below.
Mock SATs
We will hold Mock SATs for Year 6 pupils during the first week back after half term. You can download the Mock SATS Help Booklet for pupils by clicking on the image below. Each pupil will receive a hard copy of this before half term.
The booklet also includes the following timetable for the Mock SATs:
The Mathematics test
There are three papers in the mathematics test for Year 6.
- Paper 1 – Arithmetic (30 minutes)
- Papers 2 & 3 – Mathematical Reasoning (40 minutes each)
The questions on these papers are set out in approximate order of difficulty, so children who are less confident with more challenging mathematics may not finish the whole paper.
The English tests
There are two tests for English: Reading; and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS).
The reading test has one paper and the grammar, punctuation and spelling test has two papers.
- Paper 1 – Reading test (60 minutes)
- Paper 1 – Grammar, punctuation and vocabulary (45 minutes)
- Paper 2 – Spelling test (15 minutes)
Pupils will learn everything they need
for the tests during lessons at school.
However, if you would like to help them revise, here are some documents that can help you prepare them for the tests.
