Year 6 Writing homework

19 May 2017

Friday 19th May 2017 - due in on 25th May 2017

LO: Writing a newspaper article

Look at a newspaper with an adult. It can be a local or national newspaper (free or bought). Read some headlines and articles together.

Now write a newspaper article about an event you have attended or seen on TV – this could be the Handsworth Summer Fete or a football match that you attend or watch on TV.

Remember, you are reporting the news so think about:
  • A short, snappy and catchy headline
  • A first sentence to sum up what the story is going to be about
  • Paragraphs introduced by a topic sentence (you could also include a sub-heading)
  • Facts (the 5Ws: who, what, why, where and when)
  • The opinions of eye-witnesses
  • Quotes from the people involved in the story
  • Photos and captions help to tell the story
  • Written in the past tense
  • Written in the third person
  • Sum up your story in your final paragraph (include your opinion)
We’re looking forward to reading your news articles!
