What we know about oceans

02 Mar 2020

Today we explored things that we already know about the ocean. Our little people have a very impressive knowledge of the marine world.

We are EXTREMELY proud of our writing. We are aiming to write short sentences in meaningful contexts. In case it is useful to you at home, here are the stages we go through to write a sentence

- Say the sentence out loud, breaking the flow of speech into words. Some of us clap each word while we do this

- Identify the first word and 'sound talk' it. For example 'fish... f-i-sh'

- Write down one grapheme for each sound. It doesn't need to be the correct grapheme for that word, a phonetically plausible one is great at this point. It would be absolutely fine, for example, to write 'worter' rather than 'water'.

- Leave a 'finger space' and do the same for the next word. We can get lost in our sentence so it helps to read back our words to find what comes next.

I am *very* aware that this is hard work and there is absolutely no pressure to be doing this at home. Our little people should only be writing in meaningful contexts when they are highly motivated to do so. But I thought it might be useful to know.

While I'm boring you about early writing, this chart might be useful! It isn't exactly as clear cut as this and children often skip some of these stages but I find the chart useful in understanding their journey toward writing. https://eyfsmatters.wordpress.com/2016/04/07/progression-in-writing/ Let me know if you have any problem with the link

Hi is there any books you can recommend about the 0cean? We are needing a book top up at home so will be useful to tie it in with school

Sorry that formatting is quite hard to read. If anyone else has any recommendations, feel free to share them here

Georgia came out of school today asking what I knew about the ocean! So nice to hear what she has been up to instead of β€˜nuffffin’ haha
