Loughton Astronomical Society Astrokyds - Gravity and how to beat it
Miss Jordaan - 10 Jun 2016
Loughton Astronomical Society Astrokyds
Frankie, Zaki, Oliver, Reuben, Martin, Emily, Faith, Alfie, Lola and Joe had a great time at Astrokyds tonight.
In the News since our last meeting:
Lightning, Thunder and the changing weather.
Sun with no spots.
An astroid explodes over Arisona.
The Smoke trail from the astroid was 1-2m in diameter and exploded at 90km up.
18 June - Tim Peake is returning to earth. They will land in Kazakh Sleppe Central Asia.
He said he is missing the rain in the UK.
GRAVITY
We need to thank Isaac Newton and Galileo Galilei for their contributions towards the knowledge we have today about gravity.
HAMMER AND FEATHER TEST
We dropped a hammer and a feather from the same height.
The hammer landed first.
The feather took a bit longer because of all the air resistance.
TENNIS BALL AND PING PONG BALL TEST
In pairs we dropped the 2 balls at the same time from the same height.
The 2 balls landed on the table at the same time.
Here we are putting the ping pong ball on top of the tennis ball and we are dropping them. The tennis ball is landing first and the ping pong ball is landing on top of the tennis ball. The ping pong ball is bouncing off the tennis ball and is flying through the air.
HOW CAN WE DEFY GRAVITY?
Sky Hooks and the Space Elevator
Geostationary Orbit 35,768km above mean sea level
SPACE PLANES
We had a look at interesting facts about these Space Planes
First Space Planes: Space shuttle 1981
Buran 1988
Space Ship One 2004
Boeing X-37 2010
CONCEPTS
Bristol Ascender - 1 pilot and 1 passenger
Bristol Space Bus - 50 people or cargo
Do you know what is the difference between a rocket and a jet?
A jet uses air from outside the jet to burn the fuel.
A rocket needs to caryy oxygen and fuel inside the rocket
OTHER WAYS TO RE-USE A ROCKET
Space X falcon 9 - Booster landing on barge at sea
ANTI-GRAVITY DEVICES
Anti Hydrogen devices
Electrical devices
Electro Magnetic Devices
Spinning Devices
There is is enough evidence that it is worth having a look at...
ROCKET LAUNCH
For the last part of the session we launched our rockets.
We had to put water in our 2L plastic colddrink bottles.
We had to then place it securely over the cork that is attached to a tube that was attached to a pump.
We had to switch on the pump.
The pump added air to the bottle and this built up the pressure inside the bottle.
The bottle went flying and the water sprayed everywhere.
We tried to catch the bottles when they came down.
Children's feedback and evaluation
I found it intersting that the ping pong ball will bounce in the air when you drop it on top of the tennis ball.
The most exciting part was launching the water rockets and trying to catch them.
I found it interesting that when we dropped the tennis ball and ping pong ball from the same height at the same time that they landed on the table at the same timeI would like to see more of the rocket launching.
I would like to go again because I would like to learn lots more new things.
I found it interesting that Tim Peake is coming back to earth very soon after 6 months in Space.
I found the comet exploding and bottle rockets interesting.
I would like to see more of the gravity bit and learn more about it. I would like to do another fun experiment.
I would recommend these sessions to a friend because it was fabulous learning about space and gravity.
Next time I would like the rocket to travel a longer distance.
I found it interesting that they are making new rockets all the time.
I would like to see more videos about space.
I would recommend these sessions to a friend because it is very factual.
I would like to have a longer session outside.
I would recommend this to people who like learning about Astronomy.
WE HAD TOO MUCH FUN....AGAIN!!!
WE LOVE SCIENCE!
