Parent Governor Vacancy
19 Sep 2018
Would you be interested in becoming a Parent Governor on the School Governing Body?
Handsworth’s Governing Body supports the school and the Head Teacher. Together, we provide a strategic direction to the school, to ensure that the school has clear aims and values that are championed by the whole school community. All the work we do has school improvement at its heart. We work with the Head Teacher and staff in raising standards of achievement, establishing high expectations and promoting effective teaching and learning so that every pupil achieves to the best of his or her ability.
Our Governing Body constitutes 12 volunteers who are parents, staff and members of the wider community. We meet formally either once or twice a term in the evening. You will also be involved in one of two smaller committees, Resources and Teaching & Learning, which meet at 8am once every half term. A governor’s term of office is four years. We are seeking any parents with legal or communications experience as this would be of particular value in complementing the existing skill set on the Governing Body.
If you would like more information, please visit the Governors’ pages of the school website or you can speak with a member of the Governing Body. If you are interested in becoming a parent governor, please notify the school office or get in touch via ‘contact governors’ on the website by Friday 21st September. In the very likely event that there are a number of parents interested, we will have an election. This will involve each parent writing 100 words describing why they are interested in becoming a governor and parents will get the opportunity to vote based on this.
There is an expectation that new governors undergo induction training to support them in fulfilling their role. This year, the training dates are (7pm – 9pm) 25th September, 16th October and 13th November 2018. There is also additional training available, provided by the local authority, to further enhance your skills as a governor.
This is a very rewarding role and a great opportunity to become involved in your child’s school at a strategic level and to join an experienced and committed team.
