Maths this week (Week beginning 20.2.2012)

Weighing

This week we have been learning about weight. First we compared the weight of different objects and put them in order. Then we estimated how many cubes/crayons/pencils/marbles each object would weigh. After that we found the weight of each object using bucket scales and discussed the difference between our estimates and the actual weight. Words we have used a lot this week include 'weight' 'heavy' 'light' 'equal' 'estimate' 'accurate' 'measure' 'more' 'less' 'half' 'order'.

We also used the smart board to play some weighing games. We had to estimate which animals would be 'a lot heavier/lighter' or 'a little heavier/lighter' than a given animal. We then tested our estimates by weighing the animals.

Some of us also began to learn about grams and kilogrammes. We estimated how many grams or kilogrammes our abject weighed and then tested our estimate by using the bucket scales and weights to measure the weight of the object. We also measure our own weight in kilogrammes using the scales cheeky
