We use Numicon shapes at school to help us with our Numbers
Numicon shapes give us a 'real' object to represent each number
We can 'see' the number, by looking at the shapes and counting the holes in each shape. We can feel the number and explore how the shapes are bigger or smaller depending on the number they represent. Each Numicon shape gives children an image of what a number looks like. They begin to see the relationship between numbers, with each piece having one hole more than the previous one.
We have been playing with Numicon shapes a lot in Nursery and the children are learning which piece represents each number. and how it compares to other numbers.’
