Summer Term 2 - 2015

Our topic this half term is: Marvellous Mini beasts

We cannot believe that this is going to be our last few weeks in Reception! We have a very busy and exciting half term.

Literacy

This term we will be focusing our literacy work on ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle, ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ and ‘Superworm’ by Julia Donaldson. Our author focus is going to be Julia Donaldson and we will be reading as many books of hers as we can find!  What is your favourite book?  Bring it in so that you can share it with your friends. In addition, if you have anything related to mini beasts (but not the real thing!) e.g. non-fiction books, puzzles, posters, postcards or models we would love to see them so please send them in and we can add them to our class display.

We are going to be using all the information that we can find to inspire lots of different types of writing such as posters, descriptions, captions and using our imagination to create stories.

Reading Book and Key Words
The children continue to make excellent progress with their reading and are segmenting and blending brilliantly. They are enjoying learning all the different ways to read and write the same sound (ay, a-e, ai) and are becoming increasingly confident about using them in their reading and writing.

We recommend that the children read their reading book at least 3 times a week. Please remember to send in the books everyday and don’t forget to sign the white record book otherwise books cannot be changed.

The children have learnt all of the key words now. Keep practising!

Mathematics
In our mathematic lessons we will be doing lots of practical problem solving, linking maths and everyday experiences. We will be counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and thinking about big numbers such as 100 numbers. We will be practising number bonds to 10 and beyond by counting mini beasts and other objects. As part of our shape, space and measures work we will continue to explore 2D and 3D shapes and measure lots of things in different ways, such as investigating capacity. We will also be adding up with money, making different amounts and practising telling the time.

PE
The PE times are still the same.

RIL- PE days will be on Tuesday and Thursday
RHW- PE days will be Tuesday and Thursday

In the Summer term we do as much PE as possible outside.  At the moment we are having lots of fun practising for Sports Day on 25th June! Please remember that the children should have a full PE kit, with all items clearly labelled, in school at all times.

Special News
There are lots of exciting events taking place this term.  Max’s mum (RHW) is going to be helping us with our stick project.  Don’t forget to look out for lots of interesting sticks and bring them in. Our trip to the Epping Conservation Centre for a minibeast hunt and pond dipping is on 17th July.  We will be making our final trip to Highams Park W/C 29th June and there will be a Special Book Evening W/C 6th July, so that you can come and see all the special work that the children have made this year.
