Spelling Homework year 1

Miss Jordaan - 03 Dec 2020

Please find the revised letter for Spelling Homework.

Year 1 Spelling Homework

Dear Parents/Carers,

This green book is for your child’s spelling homework. Each Friday your child will get a new list of spellings to learn. The spelling books will be collected in on a Wednesday and will be returned to you on the Friday after the quiz.

Your child should practice spelling the words on the sheet provided using the LOOK, COVER, WRITE, CHECK strategy.

LOOK- Look at the spelling word, sound it out, segment and blend it.
COVER – Cover the word & WRITE – Write the word without looking at the original spelling
CHECK – Check if the spelling is correct.
WRITE - Ask adult to say word and then write again.
Feel free to practice the spellings as many times as possible after the LOOK, COVER, WRITE, CHECK has been completed.

Please do any additional practices on other paper.

Spelling practice is another great opportunity to practice handwriting! Please ensure your child uses a pencil and that they form their letters correctly. Please support your child to write one sentence using some of the key words, ensuring that they start the sentence with a capital letter and finish with a full stop, e.g. The girl went to the park to play.

For this term, we will be revising Reception Key words and will then move on to Year 1 Common exception words.  It is important that the children are confident with their Reception words and write them correctly not only in the quiz, but also in their work.

Please ensure your child’s spelling book is in their bag on Wednesday so that we can quarantine their books for 48 hours, ready to be returned to you on Friday.

Should you have any questions regarding any of the above information or how to support your child further with their spellings please do not hesitate to speak to your class teacher.

Many thanks,

Mrs Lucas, Miss Jordaan & Mrs Green.
