Spelling Homework
06 Nov 2026
Dear Year 1 families,
This letter outlines our spelling homework process being introduced today. Your child will take home their first spelling activity in their new spelling homework book.
Each Friday your child will get a new list of spelling words to learn. The spelling books will be collected on a Thursday morning and will be returned to you on the Friday with their new phonics home reader.
Your child should practice spelling the words by:
1) copying the word first
2) Use the LOOK, COVER, WRITE, CHECK strategy
LOOK- Look at the spelling word, special friends, fred talk, blend the word.
COVER – Cover the word and spell it.
WRITE – Write the word without looking at the original spelling
CHECK – Check if the spelling is correct!
3) Finally they will write the word one last time after hearing it read aloud by you or another family member.
Feel free to practice the spellings as many times as possible after the LOOK, COVER, WRITE, CHECK has been completed. Please do any additional practices on other papers.
Spelling practise is another great opportunity to practice handwriting. Please ensure your child uses a pencil and that they form their letters carefully and correctly. Writing sentences with the spelling words in them is a fantastic way to develop an understanding of how these words can be in context. Please encourage your child to write one sentence using at least one of the spelling words.
We will be revising Reception key words and will then move on to Year 1 Common exception words. It is important that the children are confident with their Reception words and write them correctly not only in the quiz, but also in their work.
Should you have any questions regarding any of the above information on how to support your child further with their spelling work please do not hesitate to speak to your class teacher.
Thank you for your support.
