THE INVADERS SONG
Verse 1
I haunt an old classroom
For I’m a little ghost.
I’ve seen many lessons
But the one I love the most
Are those about invaders,
A scary bunch who came
From over the ocean
To conquer and to maim
Chorus
They rearranged the land,
Crowned new kings,
Changed the customs
Brought new things
Spoke other languages,
Built houses new,
The style of fashion,
Well, that changed too.
Verse 2
The Celts were barbarians
More scary than my mate
Their Queen Boudicea
She’s the one
I love to hate.
They made things from iron
A clever thing to do,
And if it hit you on the head,
You knew about it too!
Chorus
Verse 3
Next came Roman soldiers,
A marching all in time.
Fond of their laws
And roads in a straight line.
They gave us central heating
And a calendar to date,
Invented loads of concrete
Enough to fill a lake.
Chorus
Verse 4
The Romans had to go back
To protect Italy.
The Saxons came to take their place
And settled comfortably.
Cornwall, Wales and Scotland
Didn’t want to play,
But all the other places
Joined the Saxon way.
Chorus
Verse 5
Another lot of ‘vaders
Hit Lindisfarne one night
Vikings killed the poor old monks,
They weren’t at all polite.
The Saxon King, dear Alfred,
Tried to tame this beast.
The only thing he managed was
To keep them in the East.
Chorus
