The Power of Reading project CLPE’s highly successful Power of Reading project enhances teachers’ and children’s pleasure in reading, and raises children’s achievement through teachers’ knowledge of literature and its creative use in the classroom.  The project has now been running for eight years and has worked nationally with 1400 schools and 2250 teachers in 20 Local Authorities from Cumbria to Bournemouth and Bristol to Cambridgeshire.

Project aims
The project aims to enhance teachers’ and children’s pleasure in reading and raise children’s achievement through developing teachers’ knowledge of literature and its use in the primary classroom.

Raised achievement
Analysis of data from participating schools and local authorities (2008-10) shows 70% of children progressed by 2 or more National Curriculum sub levels and 30% by 3 or more.  Data specifically indicates that as a result of the project the rate of progress for boys is narrowing the attainment gap between boys and girls. Data shows significant improvements in writing.

Positive attitudes to reading
Findings from the research, funded by the Arts Council, shows that children are:

• choosing to read more often and at greater length
• keen to read challenging books
• more confident and knowledgeable in talking about books
• willing to seek out deeper meanings in texts
• showing greater enjoyment and achievement in writing.

Changes in attitude have been particularly significant for boys who have been reluctant readers and writers.

Each class at Handsworth follows several CLPE core book projects each year, such as:

Year 3                             Year 4                               Year 5                               Year 6
The Mousehole Cat       Vjarjak Paw                     The Silver Horse              Odysseus
