week beginning 22.4.13

25 Apr 2013

Homework.

Literacy:
This week in literacy we have been learning how to use some new connectives. We learnt how to use ‘who’, ‘while’, ‘which’ and ‘or’ to join two sentences together. Some of us also learnt how to use adverbial phrases. Click on the links below to practise and learn more:

We wrote a poem about the Kalahari desert using phrases to describe what we could see and adjectives to describe how this made us feel (see home page for pictures). We will be making a class photo album in the style of ‘Meerkat Mail’. Please could your child bring in a couple of photographs of them, their pet or a place they have visited so that they can add to the photo album.

Numeracy:
We have been following on from last week. Last week we added and subtracted 9, 19, 29, 39 etc by adding and subtracting 10’s numbers. This week we did the same but for 11, 21, 31, 41 etc

For example:
37 + 11 = 37 + 10 = 47 + 1 = 48
153 – 31 = 153 – 30 = 123 – 1 = 122
Some of us also learnt how to multiply and divide by 10 and that when we divide a number by the same number we get 1 e.g. 3/3 = 1
To improve with the above you need to be secure in counting forwards and backwards in 10’s, especially crossing the hundreds numbers backwards.
It is also important that you can apply these skills to answer a variety of word problems, including finding the difference between 2 numbers and finding out how much more 1 number is than another e.g.

Jack has 372 pence and Jill has 89 pence. How much more does Jack have than Jill?

Science:
This week we have been continuing with our healthy eating topic. We discussed our food diaries and looked at the healthy things we ate and the less healthy foods and learnt about portion size.
We also researched bugs as we will be going on a bug hunt when we go to Highams Park Lake. We used a tree diagram to identify different bugs. We will be presenting our data, in table and graph form, using the laptops. Take a look at the following links to learn more:

D&T:
We are looking at different types of puppet and how they are made and how they move. The children will be making their own sock puppets in the coming weeks, therefore, please could they bring in 1 old sock to do this. To take a look at different puppets try the link below:
