Project opportunities - History

19 Mar 2020

History activities:

Below are a number of activities that we have put together to support your learning in our current History topic: The Vikings and Anglo Saxons.  You can do as many of them as you would like to.

These activities are not compulsory,  they can be done alongside your regular Maths, Comprehension and Spelling homework, but we hope you will attempt at least one of them.

Any projects can be handed in after the Easter holidays and we will have time where children can show their creations and work to their class.

Please ask us if you have any questions  or if you would like any resources to support you.

Challenge 1 - Answer the two key questions below.  You should aim for one full side of A4.

Why is it important to learn about the past?
How do we know what happened in the past?

Explain your answers fully and use evidence where possible.

Challenge 2 - Imagine you have been asked to illustrate a new version of the legend of Beowulf.  Choose two scenes from the story and create some A4 sized pictures to go with them.  You may choose to draw, paint, use a computer or any other creative medium you can think of.

Challenge 3 - Design patterns for a new sword and shield for Beowulf.  If you want an extended challenge; try to draw them in the style of Charles Keeping.  You may also wish to make them out of objects from home (eg card and foil).

Challenge 4
- Make a model of a Viking long-ship.  Record this task by writing the steps you followed to build your models and by taking photographs of the process and your finished product.

Challenge 5 - Make a glossary of words that we use in our vocabulary that originated from the Anglo Saxons or Vikings.

Challenge 6 - Make your own collection of Viking Pattern drawings.  Type in Viking patterns and/or Viking Spiral Patterns on Google images for some inspiration.  You can attempt to copy or make your own design.

A great website is National Geographic for Kids.  There is so much amazing information to learn about the Anglo Saxons and Vikings.  Also, look out for the fact of the day on your class homepage.

You can submit anything that you would like to show us below.

Enjoy!
