Place value

18 Nov 2014

This week we are learning about place value - to know what each digit in a number represents.

1.  The first website is a fun way to remind the children about the different ways to show the value of numbers.

2.  Look at the number given. Choose a ten and a unit to make up the number. Check your answer.

3.  Once the children have chosen numbers from the hundreds, ten and units they      can now say what the new number will be...
     eg. 100   +   50  +   4   =  154           hundred and fifty four
     Check your answer.

4. Another way to show place value is through partitioning
            TU                                             HTU
            56                                               149

             /       \                                                     /      |     \
          50        6                                             100      40       9

Choose 5    2 or 3 digit numbers and partition them in this way.

     TU   U
5.  50 + 6 = 56             5Tens and 6 Units = 56
