Homework week commencing 21st May

30 Apr 2012

Literacy
We are studying The Highwayman for the next two weeks; and doing lots of fun activities about this beautifully descriptive, classic poem. Read the poem at home so you are familiar with it. Find it in our Homework section. You can also listen to versions spoken and sung on Youtube (ask an adult first).

Writing
Have a look at your ‘How to improve my writing’ booklet
Choose words from your lists eg.  Adverb, adjective, emotion, connective.  Now write a creative sentence using these words.
Create interesting sentences and paragraphs.
You can use these sentences/paragraphs for your writing on a Thursday and Friday.

If you would like Ms Adcock to check your work, bring it into school, and you will earn a sticker.

Spelling:To investigate and learn spelling rules for -ei and -ie words.
Spelling Assessment Monday 28th May
Think about the spelling rule for these words. There are some exceptions!
Practice the spelling words. Look Cover Say Write
Write sentences using these words. You can also write a paragraph using all of the spelling words.  Look at the connective card to help you.  You can also play some games (like the ones we do in class) to learn your spelling words eg.  Hang man, snap, find the pairs, fill in the missing letters etc.

Reading
READING OPENS DOORS
You need to read every day!
Home school reader:  Your parents need to sign your home school diaries once you’ve read your book or when you’ve finished a few pages on the day.  You can change your reader on any day that you need to, but you must bring in your record on your given day.

You can read any other material at home for eg.  Newspaper, Magazine,  Leaflets etc

Use the Bloom’s taxonomy activity sheets to complete one activity once you’ve finished your reader.  You can do as many activities as you like.  Try to do a variety of activities over the next few weeks.

If you would like Ms Adcock to check your work, bring it into school, and you will earn a sticker.

Numeracy
Mental maths assessment Friday
Every week you need to practice your timestables and division facts for all 12 tables.
Eg. 6 X 7 = 42, 7 X 6 = 42, 42 ÷ 6 = 7, 42 ÷ 7 = 6.
Focus on those you find most difficult (6, 7 and 8 X are usually the trickiest!).
Write down the division facts in order.  Learn them.
Now you can write them down in random order.  Answer them as quick as possible.  Ask someone in the family to test you.  You can also play games to help you to learn them.  Eg.  Write the multiples of 6 on cards.  Now write down the division facts on some cards.  Shuffle the cards.  See if you can match the cards as quick as you can.

You also need to finish your 2 sheets of homework (matching fractions/decimals; and capacity) due on Thursday 24th May. If you have any questions please come and see me before it is due.

Whole School Project
As well as supporting Team Great Britain at this year's Olympic Games, we are also supporting Australia; and Spain in the Paralympics. Do some research on one or both of these countries and bring in your findings / any interesting things that could be used for our whole school display - which will be seen by other schools as well.
Well done to those children who have already brought some in! We are starting to get a good collection going :)
Science
In Science we are looking at changing sounds – and investigating pitch and tone which links to our Music theme of exploring sound sources.  We will have a science test on Friday 25th May 2012, so make sure you are revising at home on: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize/science/physical_processes/
