Year 4 Spring Newsletter First Half 2013

19 Dec 2012

Year 4 Spring Newsletter First Half term 2013
Happy New Year to you all!

We trust you have had a fun, relaxing and welcome holiday and are now ready for the next energetic half term in Year 4.

Swimming
Lessons will be on Mondays, starting on
14th January, 2013, for 9 sessions.
Please ensure your child brings their
swimming kit each Monday.
(A costume, towel and hat are essential)

This term our Creative Curriculum Topic Title is
Location! Location! Location

This theme will cover all manner of sub-topics.
In English we will be reading poetry and stories from around the world and using these to support our writing.  We will also be using non-fiction texts to research how life in other parts of the world compares to our own.
In Maths, areas of study will include comparing/ordering numbers up to 10 000, recognising negative numbers in context, deriving doubles/halves of multiples of 10–500/100–5000, multiplying mentally, 2D symmetry and 3D polyhedron and tetrahedron, understanding standard metric/imperial units of capacity and reading simple timetables.
Learning multiplication and division facts by heart and with quick recall is very important, too.
We will also, as ever, incorporate solving word problems in lessons.

In Science we will be learning about solids and liquids and how they can be separated.

In Geography we will be looking at the Indian Village of Chembakolli  and investigating the physical and human features (climate, jobs, schools and shops) and how these relate to city life and our lives.
In RE we will be linking our work in Geography to why Hindus worship at home and a Mandir.

Please also see our termly curriculum overview under the Curriculum Tab.

Dates for your diary:
Trip to the British Library – Thursday January 17th

Homework:
As last term:
Maths homework will be sent home on Fridays to be returned by the following Thursday.
Spellings will be set weekly and tested a week later (Year 4 AG/HS  Mondays  and Year 4 JL Fridays). We are setting the English homework on the reverse of the spelling sheet.
Reading Books will be changed through the week and each group will have a specific day when books are changed. (Books can only be changed when parents have signed the Home-School Diary to say that the book has been read, shared and discussed.)

As always, you are very welcome to speak to us after school.
If you feel you need a longer time to talk, please ring the office in advance to arrange an appointment.

Best wishes for another brilliant term.
Ms Soar, Mrs Green and Mrs Leftwich
