'Spot The Difference'
Year 4 Spring term 1 2012

Welcome back and a happy new year from all at Handsworth. We would like to say a big thank-you for the cards and gifts we received it was very kind of you all! We hope you had a great Christmas break and are ready for an exciting 2012!

Numeracy This term we start off with basic number concepts below are other topics we will cover this term.
  • Add or subtract mentally pairs of two-digit whole numbers (e.g. 47 + 58, 91 -35)
  • Derive and recall multiplication facts up to 10 x 10 and their corresponding division facts
  • Develop and use written methods to record, support and explain multiplication and division
  • Identify the doubles of two-digit numbers.
  • Draw polygons and classify them by identifying their properties, including their line of symmetry
  • Perimeter and area
  • Identify pairs of fractions that total 1

Literacy We start this term with a focus on poetry and looking at the work of Micheal Rosen. The children will have an opportunity to write their own poetry as well as performing poetry. We then move on to a narrative topic using ‘seasons of splendour’ as our stimulus.

Science This term we will be looking at solids and liquids and how they can be separated the children will also be learning about Habitats. These topics will help us to explore differences within a different context.

Geography To help explore our theme for the term we will be learning about India and looking at the differences and similarities shared with England. The children will also be completing their spring term projects looking at a country of choice.

Art/DT The children our currently making a pop-up book for a child in reception, the children have been working hard learning and making many mechanisms to help make their books exciting. We will be having an exhibition in class on Thursday 19th January
to show their hard work. Art this term will be focussed on Indian art. We will be looking at Rangoli patterns and the children will be creating their own Indian fabric.

P.E We are lucky to have some exciting P.E sessions this term 4JP will be starting street dance and
both classes will begin multiskills sessions. 4JB will continue swimming sessions this term. Watch out for school competitions to help us gear up for the 2012 Olympics!
