Week beginning 24.6.2013
25 Jun 2013
Literacy:
This week we have been learning how to write poetry. We learnt that poetry comes in all shapes and sizes. They don’t always have to rhyme or make sense. They are a form of expression and we can be as creative as we like.
One form of poetry writing we learnt this week:
Write some sentences to describe the following picture – what it looks like, what you can see and how it makes you feel:
It’s raining hard.
There are thick, grey clouds which look angry.
I can see lightning striking brightly.
It looks like a frightening and cold place.
I feel lonely.
Now look at your sentences again and cross out any words that aren’t important:
It’s raining hard.
There are thick, grey clouds which look angry.
I can see lightning striking brightly.
It looks like a frightening and cold place.
I feel lonely.
Now play around with the words to create a poem that you are happy with e.g.:
Frightening!
raining hard
cold
thick, grey clouds
angry
lightning striking brightly
lonely
frightening!
Try to write your own poem in this way using the following picture:
We also looked at rhyming poems, shape poems and acrostic poems.

Numeracy:
In numeracy this week we have been subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers from 3 digit numbers e.g. 605 – 58 = and 612 – 468 =
We have been using addition to check our answers e.g. 605 – 58 = 547
547 + 58 = 605
We have been applying this knowledge to answer a variety of problems. To develop further here are some activities to develop mental subtraction:

Science:
This week has involved a lot of practical work making and exploring circuits. We know the components of a circuit and how it works and have discussed adding different components to a circuit and the effect this has.

R.E.
We are currently learning about different customs and religions around Africa to link with the story ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain’. Here are some African stories which include some of these traditions. There are also some videos on Purple Mash showing a typical day in the life of an African child.
