Week beginning 25.2.13

27 Feb 2013

Welcome back!

We hope you've had a good first week back in school. Here are all the exciting things we've been learning about this week:

Literacy:

This week we have been learning how to give instructions to somebody else to tell them how to play a certain game. To give good, clear instructions the following are needed:
  • A title
  • A list of things you will need
  • Numbered instructions
  • Time connectives e.g.. first, next, after that, meanwhile, eventually, now, penultimately, finally
  • 'bossy' language
  • pictures are optional
Can you remember which game you wrote instructions for? Teach this game to somebody in your family. Don't forget to tell them the name of your game and to tell them the things they need before you begin!

Here are a couple of websites which may help you with instruction writing. Click on the link and hopefully it will take you to the website:

Maths:

In maths this week we have been learning how to measure the weight of objects (in particular food items) in grams and kilograms. We've used bucket scales with weights and food scales as well as weighing scales to measure our own weight. We estimates how much we thought each food item weighed and then measured it to find out how close we were. We compared the actual weight to the weight given by the manufacturers and found many to be inaccurate! We also did some problem solving including:
  • finding the difference
  • how many g in a kg?
  • if something weighs 0.2 of a kg how many g does it weigh?
  • if a bag of sugar weighs 200g and butter weighs 600g how many packets of sugar would we need to weigh the same as the butter?
  • reading scales without all the numbers showing.
Here are some good websites to practise and extend your weighing skills:

Here's a quick problem for you to solve:

A bag of Easter eggs weighs 2kg.Bob eats half the Easter eggs and Jessy then eats half again. How much does the bag weigh now? How much is this in grams?

Eric comes home from the shop. He bought some more Easter eggs to put in the bag. One weighs 0.8 kg and one weighs 1kg - how much does the bag weigh now? How much is this in grams? How much more does the bag weigh now than it did in the beginning?

Try cooking something at home. Use the scales to measure the different ingredients. Are you measuring in grams or kilograms? Give someone instructions on how to make it.

Science:

This week we started our 'Health and Growth' topic and 'Animals and Plants in our Local Environment'. In preparation for the visit to the farm we have been looking at baby animals and what they need to stay healthy and how they grow. We've also spoken a little about mammals, insects, birds etc. Click on the link to extend your learning:

ICT:

We are going to start learning how to use 'Photostory 3' which is a free downloadable programme used to upload pictures and edit them. You can then convert your pictures into a slide show.

P.E.
Speed stacking to improve fine motor activity.
