Autumn 1 Term Newsletter

10 Sep 2012

Autumn Term Newsletter.

Dear Parent/Carer,
Welcome back! We hope you've had a good holiday. We have lots of exciting things planned for this half term. This year we will be following the creative curriculum where most subjects will be linked to a theme for the half term. You will see evidence of this in the exhibition of the children's work on the 21st of September.
Following this our topic for the half term will be 'Eco/Recycling'.
Here is an overview of the topics we will be covering this half term.
What we will be learning:

Literacy:
This half term we will be following the book '10 things I can do to help my world' by Melanie Walsh. This links in with our eco theme for the half term. If you'd like to read this text with your child you're very welcome but please could you wait until we've started to work with it in class as the children may be asked to predict certain parts of the story. Instruction writing will be a focus here.

Phonics:
We will be reviewing all the sounds learnt previously in year 1. There is a 'Sounds Table' in the home diary which you can refer to. We will also use the assessments done at the end of year one to inform our teaching. We will also focus on past/present and future tense, suffixes and prefixes and paragraphs.

Reading:
We will be assessing the children's reading in the next couple of weeks after which we will send home the appropriate level reading books. We would also encourage you to visit the library with your children and read a range of text in order to promote the enjoyment of reading. Comprehension is a big part of reading which should be focused on as well as decoding.

Numeracy:

  • Shape and space - mainly 2D and 3D shapes
  • Revision of counting on in 1's or 10's from a two digit number and writing numbers up to and beyond 100
  • Grouping objects in 3's, 5's and 10's
  • Estimating up to 100
  • Partitioning 2 and 3 digit numbers into hundreds, tens and units
  • Ordering numbers up to at least 100
  • Addition crossing 10's e.g.... 28 + 6 =
  • Adding 3 numbers putting the larger number first e.g.... 8 + 4 + 2 =
  • Rehearse addition and subtraction number bonds for numbers up to 20 e.g.... 1 + 19 = 20, 2 + 18 = 20, 3+ 17 = 20
  • Missing number sentences e.g.... 5 + _ = 9
  • Estimate, measure and compare lengths in cm and m

Topic:
Science - Grouping and Changing materials. Recycling, reducing and reusing
Geography/History - What it's like to live on an Island now and in the past.
ICT - We are detectives - researching
Art/D&T - Using recyclable materials to make a shelter/Tipi
P.E. - Dance and Gym
PSHE - Rules for looking after the world
Music - Exploring instruments (recyclable) and symbols
RE. - What is the Torah and why is it important to Jewish people.

Volunteers:
The children's learning is enhanced so much by parents coming into the classroom. If you have particular skills or interests that you would like to share with the children we would really appreciate you letting us know. Golden time is a really good opportunity to do this which normally takes place on Friday afternoon.

We are in the process of planning a trip for this term and will let you know as soon as we can.
